Baseball Splits Wild Doubleheader With Grinnell

LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan baseball opened its home slate with a dramatic walk-off win before falling in game two, splitting Tuesday's doubleheader against Grinnell at Sandhills Global Youth Complex. The Prairie Wolves took the opener in extra innings, 13-12, on a walk-off balk, while the Pioneers shut down NWU's bats in the nightcap, 6-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1  Nebraska Wesleyan 13, Grinnell 12 (8 innings)
The Prairie Wolves found themselves in an early 7-2 hole heading into the bottom of the third, but the bats came alive in the middle frames. NWU responded with five runs in the bottom of the third, including a bases-clearing double from Jake Gerardis. After Grinnell added to its lead, Nebraska Wesleyan countered with a three-run sixth, highlighted by Tommy Fiocchi's sacrifice fly, tying the game at 12.

Neither team scored in the seventh, forcing extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, NWU got runners on second and third. With Fiocchi at the plate, Grinnell's pitcher flinched on his delivery, resulting in a game-ending balk and a Prairie Wolves victory.

Game 2 – Grinnell 6, Nebraska Wesleyan 0
The momentum from the opener didn't carry over into game two as NWU struggled at the plate. The Prairie Wolves managed seven hits against Grinnell's starter, who went the distance in a complete-game shutout.

Grinnell plated the game's first run in the fourth before breaking it open with a five-run sixth, taking advantage of an NWU miscue. The Prairie Wolves had chances, stranding five runners on base, but couldn't find the timely hit.
