Storm Lake, IA - Nebraska Wesleyan football dropped a cold and snowy game at Buena Vista, Saturday afternoon. The loss moves NWU to 1-8 overall and 1-6 in American Rivers Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half: After both teams traded punts on their first two drives, Buena Vista opened the scoring with a nine play, 73 yard drive, to take a 7-0 lead in the waning moments of the first quarter. After forcing a third NWU punt, the Beavers went back to work offensively, driving to the NWU seven yard line before being forced to settle for a field goal. The Prairie Wolves would keep the game within one score as
Jeremy Grayson blocked the kick. However, momentum quickly swung back in Buena Vista's favor as Tre Fisher picked off
Connor White and ran the interception back for a touchdown to put BVU up 14-0. Neither team generated much offense over the remaining couple minutes as BVU held a 14-0 lead at halftime.
Second Half: Nebraska Wesleyan responded to the two score deficit by embarking on a seven play, 60 yard drive, which was punctuated by a six yard
Trystin Myers touchdown run. Buena Vista countered with an eight play, 65 yard drive to retake a 21-7 lead. After trading punts,
Trystin Myers cut the deficit to seven with a 59 yard touchdown run. However a 58 yard BVU kick off return set the Beavers up at the NWU 31 yard line as the third quarter neared its conclusion. Early in the fourth quarter, Buena Vista retook a 14 point advantage on a two yard Adriel Fussell touchdown run. The Beavers would pick off
Connor White for a second time on NWU's next possesion, but the Prairie Wolf defense stood tall and forced a punt with just under six minutes to play. The Prairie Wolf offense went to work as
Connor White and
Trystin Myers led the team on a 12 play, 55 yard drive, as Myers capped it off with his third touchdown on the day. Trailing 28-21, NWU turned to its defense to get a stop, but Adriel Fussell got loose for a 72 yard touchdown run to help BVU retake a 34-21 lead. The Beavers would hold NWU scoreless on their final drive to secure the victory.
