CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Nebraska Wesleyan men's soccer put on a complete performance Tuesday afternoon, powering past Coe College 3-0 in a cold, rainy American Rivers Conference matchup at Clark Field. The Prairie Wolves move to 6-6-5 overall and 4-2-2 in conference play, while Coe drops to 4-9-4 and 2-6 in the league.
Despite the dreary conditions and a modest crowd of 45 fans, Nebraska Wesleyan found early energy and never looked back, dominating possession (54–46) and firing 17 shots to Coe's seven. The Prairie Wolves scored twice in the opening 26 minutes and added one more in the second half to seal their sixth win of the year and secure momentum heading into the postseason.
How It Happened
First Half
Nebraska Wesleyan came out aggressive, generating early pressure in the attacking third. That effort paid off in the 11th minute when senior forward Caden Tubaugh buried a top-shelf strike that ricocheted off the crossbar and in. The goal, Tubaugh's third of the season, was set up beautifully by a sequence from Max Matthies and Connor Currence. Matthies sending a driving cross across the field and Currence popping it up for Tubaugh to finish.
The Prairie Wolves doubled their advantage in the 26th minute. Matthies, who has been a force in conference play all fall, cut through the Coe back line and slotted home his team-leading seventh goal of the season. His unassisted finish gave NWU a 2-0 lead that would hold through halftime, as goalkeeper Graedon Hilton and the defense kept Coe without a shot on goal in the opening frame.
Second Half
Coe made adjustments out of the break, but the Prairie Wolves defense held firm. In the 68th minute, NWU delivered the final blow. Isaac Havemeier launched a deep throw-in from the sideline into the box, where Currence burried a diving header for his first goal of the season to push the lead to 3-0. Havemeier earned his first assist of the year on the play.
Nebraska Wesleyan continued to dictate the match, finishing with a 6–2 edge in shots on goal and 4–1 advantage in corner kicks. Hilton posted two saves en route to his fifth win and second clean sheet of the season, keeping the Kohawks off the board despite a late push.
