LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska Wesleyan men's soccer earned a key American Rivers Conference victory Wednesday night at Abel Stadium, shutting out Buena Vista University 2-0 behind second-half goals from
Max Matthies and
Caden Tubaugh. The win pushes NWU to 5-6-4 overall and 3-2-1 in A-R-C play, while Buena Vista falls to 5-9-1 and 0-6 in the conference.
How It Happened
Both sides traded early chances in a balanced opening 45 minutes. The Prairie Wolves outshot Buena Vista 9-8 in the first half, generating steady pressure off set pieces but unable to break through against Beaver goalkeeper Zachary Sigler. NWU's back line, anchored by Brenden Zuerlein, Isaac Havemeier and Kaysha Shagavah, held firm to keep the match scoreless at halftime.
The Prairie Wolves seized control in the second half. In the 64th minute, Max Matthies drew a foul in the box and calmly converted the penalty kick to the bottom right corner to give NWU a 1-0 lead. It marked Matthies' sixth goal of the season, continuing his streak of three straight games and five in conference play.
Senior Caden Tubaugh added insurance in the 80th minute, slotting home his second goal of the season after a sustained NWU build-up in the attacking third. The Prairie Wolves maintained control the rest of the way, holding Buena Vista to just five second-half shots.
Goalkeeper Graedon Hilton was steady once again between the posts, recording his first shutout of the season with four saves.
