DUBUQUE, Iowa — The Nebraska Wesleyan men's soccer team continued its strong start to American Rivers Conference play, earning a 2–0 road win over the University of Dubuque on Saturday afternoon at Oyen Field.
The victory pushes the Prairie Wolves to 4-4-4 and 2-0-1 in A-R-C play, while the Spartans remain winless at 0-8-4 (0-2-2 A-R-C).
Wil Tobaben opened the scoring in the 28th minute, finishing a cross from Brenden Zuerlein to give NWU the early edge. The Prairie Wolves doubled their advantage in the 78th minute when Isaac Havemeier headed home his second goal of the season off a perfect service from Henry Spethman.
In between, Nebraska Wesleyan controlled much of the match through organized defending and sharp ball movement. Freshman goalkeeper Christian Lindseth earned his first career win and shutout, making three saves to preserve the clean sheet.
Offensively, NWU outshot Dubuque 13–9 and held a slight 5–3 edge in shots on target. The Prairie Wolves' back line, anchored by Kaysha Shagavah, Thomas Pisasale, and Tobaben, absorbed Dubuque's pressure in the second half and limited the Spartans to low-quality chances.
How It Happened
The first half featured balanced play until the 28th minute, when Tobaben buried a right-footed shot off Zuerlein's assist to put NWU on top 1–0.
In the second half, Dubuque pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but Lindseth came up big with saves in the 80th and 85th minutes. Nebraska Wesleyan sealed the result when Havemeier converted off Spethman's cross in the 78th minute to make it 2–0, securing a second straight conference win for the Prairie Wolves.
