LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan men's basketball hung tough through the first half but couldn't maintain momentum in the second, falling to Central College, 70-55, in an American Rivers Conference matchup Wednesday night at Snyder Arena. The Prairie Wolves drop to 11-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while Central improves to 9-6 and 4-2 in league action.
How It Happened
The Prairie Wolves came out firing, using an early 10-0 run sparked by a Seth Newton three to take control of the game. Jack Groeteke notched seven points in the first 10 minutes, while the defense forced eight turnovers to stump Central's offense. Nebraska Wesleyan led by as many as 10 midway through the first half before Central found its footing. A late surge by the Dutch trimmed NWU's lead, and the Prairie Wolves went into halftime trailing narrowly, 31-29.
Nebraska Wesleyan struggled to match its first-half intensity after the break. Despite strong contributions off the bench from Devin Holmon, who added six points and three rebounds, and Andrew Brewer's six points and six boards, the Prairie Wolves couldn't find an answer offensively, shooting just 29.4% in the second half. Missed opportunities from beyond the arc and in the paint allowed Central to stretch their lead.
The Prairie Wolves battled to stay within striking distance, with Groeteke finishing with a team-high 13 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Carter Glenn chipped in eight points, and Nick Howard added eight, but the scoring droughts ultimately proved too much to overcome.
