Box Score LINCOLN, Neb. (September 14th, 2024) - Nebraska Wesleyan used a big fourth quarter to earn a 34-24 victory over Mayville State on Saturday afternoon. The win moves Nebraska Wesleyan to 1-1 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mayville State opened the scoring late in the first quarter with a nine-play, 87-yard touchdown drive. Nebraska Wesleyan responded midway through the second quarter, going on a 12-play, 93-yard touchdown drive capped off with a 12-yard touchdown pass from
Connor White to
Kevin Starnes. Just over four minutes later, the Prairie Wolves took a 14-7 lead on a four-yard touchdown pass from White to
Robert Richter. The Comets answered back with a 22-yard field goal to make the score 14-10 just before halftime.
Neither offense was able to score in the third quarter, and Nebraska Wesleyan carried a 14-10 lead into the fourth. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Mayville State regained a 17-14 lead on a 33-yard touchdown run. After stopping Nebraska Wesleyan, the Comets seemingly took control of the game with an 87-yard touchdown run, making the score 24-14.
However, Nebraska Wesleyan regained momentum with a Kevin Starnes touchdown run. Later in the quarter, White hit Ghaith Taha for a 32-yard touchdown pass to give NWU a 28-24 lead with just over three minutes to play. After recoving a Mayville State fumble, Trystin Myers effectively sealed the game with a 44-yard touchdown run, bringing the score to 34-24. The Prairie Wolf defense kept Mayville State out of the end zone to complete the comeback victory.
