Softball Concludes Mankato Dome Games

LINCOLN, Neb. (February 18, 2024) - Nebraska Wesleyan softball concluded it's time in Mankato, Minn. with a win against Gustavus Adolphus, 5-2, and loss to Saint Mary's (Minn.), 4-2, on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1
  • The Prairie Wolves' bats heated up early on Sunday as Nebraska Wesleyan defeated Gustavus Adolphus, 5-2.
  • Eva Fharnbruch made her first collegiate appearance in the pitching circle for NWU. In three and two-thirds innings, the freshman gave up just two runs, both coming in the top of the first inning. Fharnbruch would then settle in and give up just five hits while striking out two.
  • Taylor Korecky continued to provide quality at-bats for the Black and Gold throughout the weekend. Korecky blasted a pitch over the left field wall to bring Nebraska Wesleyan within one run in the bottom of the second, 2-1.
  • In the third inning with the bases loaded, Lyndsey Roth tied things up with a single to right field, scoring Jenna Kimberling, 2-2.
  • The Prairie Wolves' offense wouldn't stop there. Later in the third, Paige Davison sent a ball through the left side of the infield, bringing in Shelby Gunther, 3-2.
  • Bre Schneidewind expanded NWU's lead in the fourth inning, making the long trip all the way around the bases after an error by the Gusties' center fielder. Scoring from second along with Scheidewind was Hannah Roth, who started the inning with a single up the middle, 5-2.
  • Elise Warneke closed the show for the Black and Gold. In relief, Warneke threw three and one-third scoreless innings, striking out two and leaving the Gusties hitless for the remainder of the game.
  • Victorious in Game 1, Nebraska Wesleyan picked up their second win of the 2024 season.
GAME 2
  • In a late-scoring affair, Nebraska Wesleyan was handed their second loss of the season to Saint Mary's (Minn.), 4-2, on Sunday afternoon.
  • It was a pitchers' duel for Elise Warneke and the Cardinals's Makayla Steffes to begin the game. Neither athlete gave up a run in the first two innings of play.
  • After a throw down to second in the third inning by Val Gerlach, Saint Mary's took advantage by advancing their runner from third to open up the game's scoring, 1-0.
  • The Prairie Wolves quickly responded in the bottom half of the fourth error as Jenna Kimberling scored on a throwing error by the Cardinal's infield, 1-1.
  • SMU got to Warneke in the fifth, tacking on two more runs to their total, 3-1.
  • Nebraska Wesleyan answered back in the fifth inning. Kamdyn Sprunk sent an RBI single to right field, scoring Lyndsey Roth 3-2.
  • A RBI single to right center for the Cardinals's in the sixth inning concluded the scoring for both teams and handed the Black and Gold their second loss of the season, 4-2.
