Men's Soccer Upsets Luther in Instant Classic to Advance to A-R-C Championship

DECORAH, Iowa (November 6th, 2024) - Nebraska Wesleyan men's soccer showed grit and resilience to secure a thrilling penalty-kick victory over the regular season A-R-C champion Luther Norse on Wednesday night, clinching a spot in their first-ever American Rivers Conference Championship game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Luther set the tone early, scoring just 31 seconds into the match and pressuring the Prairie Wolf defense with a shot in the second minute. After regrouping, NWU began to control the pace, outshooting Luther 3-1 in the final 42 minutes of the first half.

In the second half, Luther sought to extend their lead with three shots in the opening 10 minutes, but the NWU defense held strong, including a pivotal save by Zachary Weis. Despite more attempts from Luther, outshooting NWU 7-3, the Prairie Wolves held firm. With only two minutes left, Brenden Zuerlein struck for NWU, netting the tying goal at 87:46. Both teams fired off one more shot before regulation ended in a 1-1 tie, forcing overtime.

In the first overtime period, NWU was aggressive, taking a 5-2 shot advantage but couldn't find the winning goal. Luther turned the tables in the second overtime with a 3-0 shot lead, yet Weis and the Prairie Wolf defense held them off, pushing the game into a penalty shootout.

The shootout opened tensely, with both teams missing in the first round. Morgan Armagost's miss gave Luther the lead in the second round, but Caden Tubaugh kept NWU alive, leveling the score. The two teams exchanged goals in the next rounds, with Alex Kohler responding for NWU in the fourth round. Weis then made a clutch save to keep the shootout even at 2-2. In the final round, Jaden Hayes fired NWU into the lead with a precise shot to the top left corner, and Weis sealed the victory with another brilliant save, sending the Prairie Wolves into the championship match.
