Football Earns Season Opening Victory Over Austin College

LINCOLN, Neb. (September 2, 2023) - Nebraska Wesleyan earned a 19-7 victory over Austin College, Saturday night. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Prairie Wolves received the opening kickoff but were forced to punt. Nebraska Wesleyan's defense responded by forcing Austin College to punt. After getting the ball back, Nebraska Wesleyan went on a nine play, 74 yard drive that was capped off with a 34 yard passing touchdown from Carter Terry to Jaheim Felder to give the Prairie Wolves a 6-0 lead. 
  • Austin College missed a 36 yard field goal in the opening moments of the second quarter. Nebraska Wesleyan capitalized on the miss by going on a 10 play, 80 yard drive that culminated in a 14 yard Nathan Athouris touchdown run to put the Prairie Wolves up 12-0. 
  • Both defenses continued to play stout following the touchdown as neither team scored for the rest of the half.
  • Both teams traded punts on their opening possessions of the second half. On Austin College's second drive, the Roos cut Nebraska Wesleyan's lead to five on a one yard run by Peyton Keily. The game remained close after the touchdown as neither team was able to score for the rest of the third quarter.
  • To begin the fourth quarter, Nebraska Wesleyan turned Austin College over on downs. The Prairie Wolves proceeded to go on a 12 play, 86 yard drive that resulted in a one yard touchdown run by Kevin Starnes to gain a 19-7 lead. The Nebraska Wesleyan defense shut down Austin College for the rest of the game to seal the win.
