Softball Celebrates Senior Day with a Pair of Close Games Against #24 Luther

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
  • In Game 1 of Sunday's Senior Day doubleheader, Nebraska Wesleyan University stayed in it until the end, but #24 Luther College pulled away late in a 4-3 victory.
  • Pitcher, Elise Warneke led the way for the Prairie Wolves, both offensively and defensively. Inside the circle, Warneke pitched all seven innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and striking out four Norse. Inside the batter's box, Warneke led the black and gold with two hits in three at bats.
  • After six, NWU held a 3-2 advantage. Hanna Roth, Bre Schneidewind and Elise Warneke were each credited with a run batted in.
  • With runners on first and second for Luther in the top of the seventh, a Norse batter roped a hard hit ball down the left field line to tie things at three a piece. Luther College would continue to ride off of their momentum and took the lead in the next at-bat.
  • Nebraska Wesleyan had one last chance in the bottom of the end, but fell in order with a pair of fly outs and a strikeout.
  • Before the start of Game 2, Emma Alfieri and Megan Bradford partook in senior festivities and were recognized for all of their hard work and dedication throughout their four years as a Prairie Wolf.
GAME 2
  • Nebraska Wesleyan University lost another lead late in a 3-2 defeat to #24 Luther College.
  • The pitching was strong on both sides. The Norse struck out eight, while the Prairie Wolves sat down seven.
  • NWU captured the lead in the first inning, when Sami MacDonald drove in one with a double to right center. Val Gerlach joined MacDonald with an RBI of her own in the first.
  • In the top of the third inning, Luther College tied things up at two and then gained the lead in the fifth, 3-2. The score stood still for the remainder of the ball game.
  • Rylee Pangborn took the loss for the black and gold. The Prairie Wolf surrendered three runs on six hits over four and a third innings, striking out three.
  • Val Gerlach, MacDonald, Jenna Kimberling, Hanna Roth, and Emma Alfieri all had one hit to lead NWU.
