Prairie Wolves Win Series Against Wartburg, Clinch First Postseason Berth Since 2013

Waverly, Iowa (May 7, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team split its road doubleheader at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. NWU won game one, 12-2 in seven innings, before falling in game two,19-7 in eight innings.

The game one win allowed the Prairie Wolves to clinch a spot in the American Rivers Conference tournament as the three seed, it will be the first postseason appearance for the program since 2013. It also gave NWU its 20th win of the season, the 20 wins are the most for the program since 2012.

Game One Recap
For the fifth straight game, Evan Kling slammed a home run. Kling went deep in the game's first at-bat for an early advantage. After the Knights answered with two runs, Nebraska Wesleyan's offense went full throttle.

The Prairie Wolves scored two runs in the top of the second inning and then added another run in the third inning before scoring two runs in the fourth and fifth innings. But the offensive fireworks were not over yet. Nebraska Wesleyan put up four runs in the sixth inning the held WC scoreless to apply the run-rule.

In the game, five different NWU players recorded multiple hits with three having multiple RBIs as well. Kaleb Knox hit his fourth home run of the series in the sixth inning. Owen Machal recorded a double and tallied a game-high four RBIs. The four RBIs are also a career-best for Machal.

On the mound, Dylan Cox earned the victory. Cox tossed six innings of work with just two runs allowed on five hits with five strikeouts.

Game Two Recap
The Knights responded to the Prairie Wolves' firepower by holding them scoreless until the fourth inning. In the fourth inning, Nebraska Wesleyan put up two runs but rallied with four runs in the fifth inning. The six runs over the two-inning stretch and a final run in the seventh inning would not be enough to stay with WC's offense though.

NWU's two through four spots in the lineup did the majority of the damage on offense. The three hitters (John Haimowitz, Derek Kolbush, and Riley Ward) combined for seven of the team's 11 hits, drove in six runs, and scored four of the seven runs.

Derek Kolbush finished with a double and a home run. Kolbush's home run in the seven inning was his 13th of the season, giving him sole possession of the program's single-season record. John Haimowitz paced the group, Haimowitz went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs. Haimowitz also record a double in the game.
