LINCOLN, Neb. – Coe College completed the series sweep of the 2019 home conference opening series on Monday (April 1) as the Kohawks defeated Nebraska Wesleyan 7-4 at NWU Field in American Rivers Conference baseball action.
The lead changed three times throughout the game, but in the end it was Coe College that came up with big hits in the 6
th inning to take the lead for good and hold on for the win. Coe improves their terrific start to the season with a 15-2 overall record and 5-1 mark in A-R-C play, while NWU falls to 3-15 and 1-5 in league play.
Coe took a 1-0 lead scoring on a triple in the top of the 3
rd inning. NWU took over the lead in the bottom of the 4
th inning.
Derek Kolbush reached on an error, then
Brook Johnson stepped up to the plate and blasted a home run over the left field wall putting NWU ahead 2-1.
In the top of the 5
th inning the long ball was a big part of the Coe offense. A lead-off single started the inning then Jordan Kaplan hit a 2-run home run to left field. On the very next pitch, Jacob Burns drove a ball over the right center field wall for a solo home run making the score 3-2.
NWU quickly responded in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.
Aaron Nichols singled, then
Spencer Scheer was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with one out. Once again Johnson came up with a big hit getting an RBI single to center field to drive in Nichols.
Tyler Winterstein was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The next batter,
Will Watkins, was also hit by a pitch to drive in Scheer and tie the game at 4-4.
A lead-off walk led to the eventual go-ahead run in the top of the 6
th inning for Coe. The Kohawks scored two runs in the 6
th inning then added an insurance run in the 7
th inning.
The Prairie Wolves could manage only one hit the final four innings as they were unable to mount a rally. NWU had only five total hits in the game.
Brook Johnson led the way going 2-5 with three RBI.
Tucker McHugh started on the mound for the Prairie Wolves going 5.0 innings allowing four earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.
Sam Condello took the loss pitching the final four innings allowing three earned runs and five hits.
NWU is right back in action on Tuesday afternoon (April 2) hosting Simpson College in an A-R-C doubleheader at 1 pm.
