CRETE, Neb. – Former conference rivals Nebraska Wesleyan and Doane played a highly competitive women's tennis match that came down to the last match with the Tigers coming out on top 5-4 on Tuesday night (March 26) at the Newburg Held Tennis Courts in Crete, Neb.
The Prairie Wolves (2-14) won two out of the three doubles matches to take the early lead.
Madi Hinshaw and
Jordyn Fossell won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles and
Shea Swanson and
Samantha Slizoski joined together to win 8-5 at No. 3 doubles. Doane won the No. 1 doubles match 8-2.
In singles play, three of the six matches went to three sets between the evenly matched teams. The first three singles matches to be completed were all won by Doane as they went ahead 4-2.
Slizoski earned a 6-1, 6-3 win against Daniella Ruiz Martinez at No. 6 singles, then Hinshaw won 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) to earn the thrilling win at No. 1 singles. With just one singles match remaining the teams were tied at 4-4.
No. 2 singles was the final match between
Han Le of NWU and Ariel Ortiz from Doane. Ortiz won set one 6-2, then Le won set two 6-3 sending it to a tiebreaker. In the third set, Ortiz was able to come away with a 10-3 win to earn the victory and send the Tigers away victorious.
Doane earns their first team victory of the year to move to 1-6 overall.
Nebraska Wesleyan is not scheduled to play another match until the American Rivers Conference Tournament in May.
