ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Opening weekend of the baseball season ended on a sour note for the Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team as the Prairie Wolves lost a pair of games on Monday. NWU lost 10-4 to Fontbonne then dropped a 13-3 decision to Greenville University. The Prairie Wolves went 0-4 to being the year.
In the third game of the weekend against Fontbonne, the Prairie Wolves were unable to come up with big hits when needed and they struggled to take advantage of miscues by Fontbonne.
NWU stranded 11 runners on base, including nine runners that were in scoring position. FU led 2-0 after three innings then NWU scored their initial run of the day.
Spencer Scheer singled, stole a base and scored on a single by
Aaron Nichols.
Fontbonne then scored four runs in the 4
th inning and four more in the 5
th to break the game open. The Prairie Wolves scored two runs in the 6
th and one more in the 7
th but it was too late.
Scheer was the only NWU player with multiple hits as he went 2-5 on the day with an RBI. NWU finished with only five hits, but they did draw five walks.
Walks were the major issue for the Prairie Wolves pitching staff. Fontbonne scored 10 runs on just seven hits as they drew 13 walks from the NWU pitchers.
Trey Pavlik started on the mound going three innings allowing three hits and two runs.
NWU scored a run in the top of the 1
st inning against Greenville in game two, but things fell off quickly.
Evan Gellatly was hit as the leadoff batter, moved to second on a wild pitch and eventually scored on an RBI from
Tyler Winterstein.
Greenville responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning, added another in the 3
rd then plated five runs on five hits in the 4
th inning. Greenville ended the game with 11 total hits, compared to two for the Prairie Wolves. The game ended in eight innings due to the run rule.
Aaron Nichols went 2-5 to lead the Prairie Wolves offense as all seven hits were singles.
Brady Harrison took the loss as the starting pitcher allowing eight runs, five earned on six hits and four walks in three innings.
NWU will not be able to make their home debut this upcoming weekend due to weather so the Prairie Wolves now prepare for their spring trip in Arizona.
