DECORAH, Iowa – No. 1 Nebraska Wesleyan completed the most successful regular season in men's basketball history with a 90-66 victory over Luther College on Saturday in Decorah, Iowa.
The Prairie Wolves finish the regular season with a 24-1 record and got the 1,500
th victory in program history, only the 11
th men's basketball team in Division III with 1500 wins.
NWU got a big performance from junior
Clay Reimers who posted a double-double scoring a season-high 28 points with 11 rebounds. Reimers was 6-11 from 3-point range in his top scoring night of the year.
Luther College couldn't crack the 3-2 NWU zone defense so settled for 3-pointers throughout the game. The Norse were 12-39 from long range for 30.9 percent and shot 35.4 percent overall from the floor.
Nebraska Wesleyan led by 13 points at halftime then pushed the lead over 20 midway through the second half behind the hot shooting of Reimers. As a team, NWU shot 51.4 percent from the field and made 13-36 on 3-pointers.
For a second straight game, the Prairie Wolves were perfect at the free throw line making 5-5 at the charity stripe. NWU was also dominant on the glass holding a +16 advantage in rebounding.
Four of the five NWU starters ended the game scoring in double figures. Reimers led the way with his 28 points.
Jack Hiller scored 17 points, making 3-7 from 3-point land.
Ryan Garver had another solid outing with 16 points, six assists, six rebounds and three steals.
Nate Schimonitz was the other player in double figures with 12 points and six assists.
Cooper Cook didn't reach double figures in scoring but did have a team-high 12 rebounds.
Luther was led by Ray Whitlock with 14 points.
Nebraska Wesleyan now prepares for the 2019 American Rivers Tournament. NWU will host a semifinal game on Thursday night playing the winner of the Coe-Simpson matchup.
