Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Career Night for Schimonitz Not Enough in Loss at UW-River Falls

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – Nate Schimonintz poured in a career-high 39 points but it wasn't enough as University of River-Falls hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds to knock off 8th-ranked Nebraska Wesleyan 84-82 in men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 21) in River Falls, Wis.

Ross Ingersoll buried a corner 3-pointer with just under eight seconds remaining to put UW-River Falls ahead by two points.  The Prairie Wolves had a chance to tie the game, but Schimonitz had his game-tying layup blocked giving the Falcons the upset victory.

Schimonitz put the Prairie Wolves (10-2) ahead 82-81 with 24 seconds left when he drove the lane and made a layup.  NWU got the ball back after the Falcons threw the ball out of bounds.  After Schimonitz gave NWU the lead UW-River Falls took the ball down the court to try and take back the lead.  Jake Reeck shot a 3-pointer that missed and NWU appeared to have pulled down the rebound, however a jump ball was called and the Falcons had the possession arrow.  On the in-bounds play an open Ingersoll stood in the corner and made the game-winning shot.

UW-River Falls (6-3) jumped out quick and led by as many as 13 points in the first half.  The Falcons were up 29-16 with 6:14 left in the first half.  From there the Prairie Wolves ended the half on a 24-8 and Nate Bahe capped it off with a 3-pointer to give NWU a 40-37 halftime advantage.

In the second half, the Falcons took back the lead at the 13:34 mark and they would hold the lead the rest of the way until under 30 seconds were left when Schimonitz got NWU back ahead.  The largest advantage was seven points for UW-River Falls in the second half but they would not allow NWU to get back on top.

The big reason the Falcons were able to get the upset victory was their ability to shoot from outside. UW-River Falls made 18 3-pointers going 18-30 from deep for 60 percent.  Meanwhile, NWU was only 6-20 on their 3-point attempts.

NWU forced 21 turnovers and scored 23 points off the turnovers, but in the end they couldn't overcome the hot 3-point shooting by the Falcons.

Schimonitz ended the game with 39 points making 16-26 from the field, 2-3 on 3-pointers and 5-5 at the free throw line to set a new career high.   He played all 40 minutes of the game to go over 1,600 career points and moved to 7th on the NWU all-time scoring charts.

It wasn't a one-man show with two other Prairie Wolves reaching double figures in scoring.  Nate Bahe finished with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Clay Reimer just missed a double-double of 10 points and nine rebounds.

Noah Hanson led the Falcons with 23 points and seven 3-pointers going 7-9 from deep.  Matt Keller scored 17 with seven assists and leading scorer Julian Jackson added 16.

Nebraska Wesleyan is back in action on Dec. 28 when they travel to Laramie, Wyoming to take on NCAA Division I University of Wyoming.  The game is exhibition for NWU but will count for the Cowboys.
