Coach Wellman Wins 100th Game as NWU Extends Winning Streak to 30

LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan head coach Dale Wellman picked up his 100th victory at NWU and the #1 Prairie Wolves men's basketball team extended their winning streak to 30 games with a convincing 94-61 victory over Luther College on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 19) at Snyder Arena.
 
NWU, the only undefeated team in NCAA III basketball, improves to 17-0 overall and 8-0 in American Rivers Conference play as they have completed the first half of the conference schedule.  Luther drops to 6-10 and 0-8 in league play now having lost 27 straight conference games.
 
Nebraska Wesleyan came out swinging early to deliver a knock out punch.  The Prairie Wolves jumped ahead 19-2 as the Norse managed just one field goal through the first nine minutes of the game.
 
Luther did get back within 15 points at 35-20 with 4:46 left in the first half, but that was the last points of the half for the Norse.  NWU ended the half on a 11-0 run to post a 46-20 halftime advantage shooting 59.4 percent in the opening 20 minutes.
 
In the second half, the Norse were able to score 41 points shooting 10-23 from 3-point range as they were only outscored by seven points in the second half.
 
The Prairie Wolves were 9-18 from long range in the second half, highlighted by Dylan Dirks who came off the bench to lead the Prairie Wolves with 17 points.  Dirks scored all 17 points in the second half, making 5-7 on his 3-point attempts.
 
A total of five players scored in double figures for NWU with the Prairie Wolves shooting 58.7 percent as a team overall.  NWU was 15-31 from 3-point land for 48.4 percent.  They once again took great control of the basketball committing only six turnovers, giving them just ten total turnovers over the past two games combined.  Nebraska Wesleyan also held a commanding 42-28 advantage in rebounding.
 
Luther was led in scoring by Garrian Wade who came off the bench to score 17 points.  The Norse were without their leading scorer Jared Nicolaisen who was out with injury.
 
Cooper Cook and Nate Schimonitz both scored 16 points for the Prairie Wolves.  Schimonitz was 3-5 from 3-point range and 6-9 overall.  Cook just missed a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds.  Ryan Garver finished with 11 points and seven assists, taking only five shot attempts all game.  Cordell Gillingham was the final player in double figures coming off the bench to score a season-high 11 points.
 
Nebraska Wesleyan will be right back in action on Monday afternoon (Jan. 21) as they host University of Dubuque at 4 pm in a Martin Luther King Jr Day afternoon special at Snyder Arena.
