Kohawks Rally Back Past Prairie Wolves 85-82

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – A halfcourt shot at the buzzer glanced off the backcourt as Nebraska Wesleyan dropped their fourth straight game on Wednesday night (Jan. 16) with Coe College rallying back to defeat the Prairie Wolves 85-82 in American Rivers women's basketball action.

NWU led by nine points at halftime and held a 12-point lead in the third quarter but they were unable to maintain the advantage.  Coe outscored the Prairie Wolves by five points in the third quarter to cut the lead down to four points.

The Kohawks finally regained the lead at the 8:13 mark of the 4th quarter to get ahead 65-63.  On the next possession the Prairie Wolves took the lead back on a 3-pointer by leading scorer Caitlin Navratil and the teams would trade leads the rest of the way.

Over the final seven minutes the lead would change seven times with neither team leading by more than three points.

With 3:28 remaining, Bailey Hallgren Meehan nailed a 3-pointer for Prairie Wolves to give NWU a 78-75 lead.  Coe cut the lead to one point with a basket with 2:31 left in the game, then took the lead at the 1:42 mark.

Navratil came back down and made a basket with 1:17 left to put NWU up 80-79.  A pair of free throws gave the Kohawks a one point lead with just over one minute remaining.  The Prairie Wolves were unable to score on their next two possessions as the Kohawks stayed ahead.  With 12 seconds left Coe went to the free throw line and made a pair to make it 83-80.

Klaire Phillips knocked down two clutch free throws for NWU with nine seconds left making it 83-82 with nine seconds left.  NWU quickly put the Kohawks on the line where they went 1-2, but Coe was able to secure the offensive rebound off the miss so NWU had to foul once again.  Once again Coe went 1-2 and NWU pulled down the rebound with four seconds left.  Caitlin Navratil dribbled up near midcourt and heaved the ball to the basket but her attempt was off.
