Sweep of Loras Secures Postseason Bid

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team swept Loras College on Saturday to secure a spot in the IIAC Postseason Tournament that begins next week.  NWU won game one 4-2, then completed the sweep with a 2-1 victory in the second game.

With the victories, NWU finished the regular season at 21-17 overall and 8-8 in IIAC play to earn the 4th seed in the postseason tournament.

Kayla Prai hit a 2-run double in the 2nd inning as NWU scored three runs to get ahead.  Nicole Vana also had an RBI single in the inning as NWU led 3-1 after two.  Loras cut the lead in half by scoring in the 4th inning.

Nebraska Wesleyan added an insurance run in the 7th when Maddy Ethen doubled to drive in Kennedy Greene.  That was all that Kailey Meyer needed to earn the complete game victory on the mound.  Meyer allowed six hits and struck out three for her 13th win of the year.

Vana led the NWU offense going 3-4 with a double.  Prai was 2-4 with a pair of doubles and Morgan Shipley also had a two-hit performance.

In the second game, Shipley doubled to lead off the 7th inning and Jordan Arndt singled to drive her in with the game-winning hit.

Loras scored a run in the bottom of the 1st inning, but they were held scoreless the rest of the way.  Meyer came in to pitch the final four innings and did not allow a hit to earn the win and move to 14-6.

The first run of the game for NWU was in the 2dn inning when Prai hit an RBI double to score Meyer.

NWU finished with 12 total hits on the game, but stranded 10 runners.  Shipley was a perfect 4-4 at the plate with a double.  Arndt, Meyer and Prai all had two hits in the game.

The Prairie Wolves will now await for the pairings to be released for the IIAC Postseason Tournament that will start Friday (May 4) at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
