LINCOLN, Neb. – Needing a victory to keep their postseason chances alive, University of Dubuque handed the Nebraska Wesleyan men's tennis team a 5-4 setback in the regular season finale on Saturday morning (April 28) at Woods Park in Lincoln.
With the loss, the Prairie Wolves ended the year at 4-16 overall and 2-6 in IIAC play to finish seventh in the conference. Dubuque earned their second conference win, then later defeated Buena Vista on the same day to move past the Prairie Wolves into the sixth and final spot in the IIAC Tournament.
The Spartans won two out of three doubles matches to take the early advantage. NWU picked up their only win at No. 3 doubles as
Jared Scherling and
Colin Hensel combined to defeat Dubuque 8-3. The Spartans won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles and 8-6 at the No. 3 doubles spot.
NWU was able to win three singles matches, winning in straight sets at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6. The swing match of the dual came at No. 1 where
Adam Olson won the first set 6-0 over Matthew Sablay of Dubuque, then Sablay came back to win 6-0, 6-2 to take the match and seal the team victory.
Gabriel Sellmer won 6-1, 6-4 over Zebulon Hill of Dubuque at the No. 4 singles spot.
Jordan Pieper won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 against his opponent Ozzy Schiessl. Scherling was the other Prairie Wolves winner blanking Bogdan Ganea 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Scherling ended the year with a team-high eight singles victories on the year.
