LINCOLN, Neb. – Four Nebraska Wesleyan pitchers combined for a shutout as the Prairie Wolves blanked Central College 7-0 in game one of an Iowa Conference baseball doubleheader on Tuesday (April 24) at NWU Field in Lincoln. The Dutch came back to shutout the Prairie Wolves 12-0 in the second game of the day.
Jesse Maguire started the game on the mound for NWU and threw three scoreless innings striking out six, including four in a row.
Brody Murphy threw the next three innings and was credited with the victory, while striking out three.
Dalton Hinrichs and
Tucker McHugh closed the game out for the Prairie Wolves.
NWU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the 1
st innings on key hits and taking advantage of Central mistakes.
Matt Orozco singled to left field to drive in
Justus Stocks, then as Orozco was advancing to second the catcher's throw sailed to center field allowing
Derek Kolbush to score. Another error on a ground ball allowed Orozco to score in the 1
st.
Joel Maxwell doubled to lead off the 2
nd inning then moved to third on a balk and scored on a ground out from
Dalton Vergith to make the score 4-0.
Riley Ward hit an RBI single in the 4
th inning to give the Prairie Wolves a five run advantage.
Derek Kolbush had the most impressive hit of the day with his solo home run that was blasted well over the right field wall. A bases loaded walk in the 7
th inning closed out the scoring for NWU.
Nebraska Wesleyan finished with 11 hits in their 8
th victory of the season that snapped Central's four-game winning streak.
Tyler Winterstein was 3-5 with a double to lead the Prairie Wolves offense.
Justus Stocks was 2-3 with a triple and
Joel Maxwell went 2-4 with a double.
Game two was all Central as they scored six unearned runs in the first inning and did not let up ending the game in seven innings due to the run rule. Of the 12 runs scored, nine of them were unearned as the Prairie Wolves committed five total errors.
Central finished with 15 total hits, with 14 singles in a game that was played in scattered rain showers.
Hayden Parker took the loss on the mound allowing five hits and six unearned runs in the 1
st inning of the game.
Brook Johnson was 2-2 as a pinch hitter as the only NWU player with multiple hits.
