Wolves Split Softball Doubleheader with Flames

OMAHA, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan split a pair of one-run softball games with College of Saint Mary on Wednesday (Mar. 28) afternoon at Heritage Park in Omaha, Neb.  The Prairie Wolves won the opener 6-5, then fell in game two 4-3 in extra innings.
 
In the opening game, NWU scored three runs in the top of the 3rd and three more in the top of the 4th to take a commanding 6-0 lead over the Flames. 
 
Jordan Arndt hit a 2-run single and Nicole Vana had an RBI single to account for the three runs in the 3rd inning.  NWU then took advantage of two errors in the 4th inning to plate three runs.
 
College of Saint Mary battled back in the bottom of the 6th inning to pull within one run.  The Flames scored five runs, highlighted by a three-run home run from Jessica Fleischman.  CSM had the tying run on first base in the 7th inning, but the Prairie Wolves ended the threat to earn the victory.
 
Kailey Meyer moved to 8-2 on the mound with the complete game victory.  Meyer struck out four and allowed nine hits in the victory.
 
Vana was 3-4 with an RBI to lead the Prairie Wolves offense as the only NWU player with a multi-hit performance.
 
CSM scored three runs in the bottom of the 1st inning of the second game to take a 3-1 lead. 
 
NWU eventually tied the game as they scored a single run in each of the first three innings.  Danelle Snyder doubled to drive in Morgan Shipley in the 1st inning.  Vana hit an RBI single in the 2nd inning to cut the lead down to one run.  They tied the game in the 3rd inning as Meyer singled and came around to score on a Flames error.
 
Neither team was able to score the rest of the way sending the game to extra innings.  In the top of the 8th, NWU had a runner on 3rd base with one out.  Jade Mendoza flied out to right field and Rachel Mundt was thrown out at the plate.
 
Brittney Banks doubled in the bottom of the 8th inning for the game-winning hit as College of Saint Mary earned the split.
 
NWU outhit the Flames 11-10 as Vana, Shipley and Kayla Prai each had two hits.  Jessie Briley took the loss on the mound allowing three earned runs with six strikeouts.
 
Nebraska Wesleyan will open Iowa Conference play on Friday when they host Wartburg College.
