LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team made their home debut with an 8-0 shutout victory over Concordia University on Wednesday night (March 14) at University Place Park. Concordia came back to win game two, 8-5 for the doubleheader split.
In the opener, the Prairie Wolves run ruled the Bulldogs in five innings, the fourth time in the past five games that NWU has used the run rule to defeat the opposition.
NWU used four hits in the first inning to plate four runs across and blow open the game early.
Katie Stanzel and
Maddy Ethen both hit RBI singles in the first inning.
In the 3
rd inning,
Kailey Meyer reached base on an error then was able to come across on another RBI hit from Stanzel to make the score 5-0.
Danelle Snyder led off the 5
th inning with a solo HR, then Stanzel singled again and scored on a triple from
Maddy Ethen.
Payton Swanson drove in Ethen with a single that ended the game.
Meyer pitched another complete game shutout allowing four hits in five innings with two strikeouts to improve to 6-2. Stanzel was a perfect 3-3 at the plate to lead the Prairie Wolves.
In the second game, NWU got ahead early once again with a run in the bottom of the 1
st inning as
Nicole Vana walked and came in to score on a sac fly from
Jordan Arndt.
Concordia tied the game with a run in the 2
nd, then took the lead with another run in the 3
rd inning. They exploded for six runs in the top of the 4
th inning to take a 8-1 lead.
Snyder got an RBI single in the sixth inning to drive in
Kennedy Greene who doubled to start the inning. The Prairie Wolves tried to make a late push and scored three runs in the bottom of the 7
th, but it wasn't enough. Meyer drove in a run with a hit and Arndt plated two with a double. Two runners were on base with the tying run at the plate, but the Bulldogs got the final two outs to end the threat.
Arndt was 2-3 with three RBI for the Prairie Wolves who finished with eight hits. Four NWU errors were the difference in game two as NWU fell to 11-7 overall.
