GRINNELL, Iowa –
Caitlin Navratil scored 30 points to lead Nebraska Wesleyan to a road 66-59 victory over Grinnell College on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 24) in Grinnell, Iowa.
With the victory, the Prairie Wolves get their second win of the season to move to 2-3 overall. Grinnell drops to 2-3 on the season.
The Prairie Wolves got off to a slow shooting the basketball, hitting only 30.8 percent from the field as they trailed 27-23 at the break. NWU was 0-13 from 3-point range in the first half, but Grinnell was not much better shooting. The Pioneers made 26.7 percent from the field hitting only 8-30.
In the third quarter is when the Prairie Wolves made their move. NWU got down by as many as 12 points early in the third quarter, then the Pioneers hit a scoring drought scoring only two points the final 6:38 of the period. Nebraska Wesleyan went on a 21-2 run during that time to lead 46-39 at the end of the third quarter.
Grinnell finally ended their scoring drought with a 3-pointer to start the quarter cutting the lead down to four points. The Pioneers were as close as four points with 5:50 left in the game, but that was as close as they would get.
The Prairie Wolves were clutch at the free throw line making 4-4 in the final minute to seal the victory.
Navratil had a huge game to lead the Prairie Wolves attack. She scored 12 of her points during the 21-2 run of the third quarter. Navratil ended the game 10-17 from the floor and 8-12 at the free throw line to score 30 points along with a team-high six rebounds. She was the only NWU player to score in double figures.
Mikenzie Delgado scored nine points and
Klaire Phillips was 7-8 at the free throw line to also score nine points.
Four players reached double figures for Grinnell led by Kathryn Stender with 14. Daria Guzzo had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
NWU will open American Rivers Conference play on Wednesday night (Nov. 28) when they host Central College at 6 pm.
