Schimonitz Shoots Wolves Past Olivet in Snyder Classic

LINCOLN, Neb. – Nate Schimonitz poured in 28 points on a perfect 10-10 shooting to lead No. 1 Nebraska Wesleyan past Olivet College 100-70 to conclude the 30th Annual Snyder Classic on Saturday afternoon in Snyder Arena.
 
Schimonitz, who was named the tournament MVP, was 7-7 from 3-point range to set a new career-high for made 3-pointers in a game.  He was 5-5 from the field in the first half, making four 3-pointers, then came back to make 5-5 in the second half with two more 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions.  His last 3-pointer ended up being a four point play as he was fouled and converted the free throw.
 
With the victory, the Prairie Wolves improve to 6-0 on the season and extend their winning streak to 19 games.  NWU has now won 16 straight games in the Snyder Classic and they have never lost a Snyder Classic game under Coach Wellman.
 
It was a close game early as Olivet jumped out to a 4-0 advantage and the Comets held close to the Prairie Wolves.  NWU led by just three points with 12:00 left in the game but a pair of technical fouls sent Cooper Cook to the free throw line where he made all four attempts making it a seven point advantage.
 
Olivet was within seven points at the 5:35 mark before NWU made a big push before the break.  A 10-0 run in less than three minutes extended the lead to 15 points and the Prairie Wolves would lead 53-38 at the break.  NWU shot 73.1 percent from the field in the first half, making 10-15 from 3-point range.
 
In the second half, NWU cooled off to 58.1 percent but the Comets were held in check shooting 41.4 percent.  NWU led by as many as 35 points late in the second half before reserves played out the game.
 
Nebraska Wesleyan finished the game shooting 64.9 percent from the field, going 18-33 from 3-point range.  It marks the second time this year the Prairie Wolves have shot over 64 percent from the field.  The 18 3-pointer are a season high as NWU went over the 100 point mark for the third time this year.
 
Not only was Schimonitz perfect from the floor, he also dished out eight assists.  The day was made extra special as he went over the 1,000 point mark for his career in the first half, becoming the 38th player in school history to score 1,000 points.
 
Cooper Cook had another big game for the Prairie Wolves to earn All-Tournament team honors a third straight year.  Cook scored 19 points, making three 3-pointers.
 
Ryan Garver was also named to the All-Tournament team as he recorded his third double-double of the season.  Garvers scored 11 points and handed out 10 assists, the third time this year he has double digit assist totals.
 
Jack Hiller was the fourth NWU player to reach double figures in scoring as he was 4-5 from 3-point range to score 16 points.
 
Trevor Manuel, who was named to the All-Tournament team for Olivet, scored 18 points to lead the Comets.
 
Nebraska Wesleyan will open American Rivers Conference play on Wednesday (Nov. 28) when they host Central College in Snyder Arena.
