INDIANOLA, Iowa – Simpson College outscored Nebraska Wesleyan 18-13 in overtime as the Storm snapped the Prairie Wolves six-game winning streak with a 102-97 victory on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 27) at Cowles Fieldhouse in Indianola, Iowa.
Nate Schimonitz hit a jump shot just above the free throw line with 43 seconds left to put NWU up by one point in regulation. A missed shot by the Storm was corralled by
Ryan Garver who was fouled and he went to the line and made two free throws with 22 seconds left. Needing a 3-pointer to tie, Simpson came down the court and found Taylor Filbert on the left wing who made a 3-pointer to tie the game with 15 seconds left.
On the Prairie Wolves possession, they lost the ball in the paint giving Simpson the ball with three seconds left. The Storm shot a contested 3-pointer at the buzzer from the corner that was off the mark sending the game to overtime.
In the overtime period the lead changed five times and NWU took a one point lead at 94-93 on a shot by
Nate Bahe. Quickly Simpson came down and got a basket from Kyle Wagner to retake the lead and they would never trail again. NWU missed a 3-pointer on their end of the court, then Wagner buried a big 3-pointer with 23 seconds left to put Simpson up by four. NWU hit only three free throws the rest of the way with Simpson going 4-4 to seal the victory.
NWU held a 42-35 advantage at halftime as the Prairie Wolves shot 60.0 percent from the field making 15-25 from the floor. Simpson picked up their shooting in the second half making 50 percent while NWU dropped to 48.3. The Prairie Wolves were only 3-8 in overtime with Simpson making 5-9 field goals.
Four Prairie Wolves scored in double figures led by
Ryan Garver who scored 26 points. Garver was 7-10 from the floor and hit 11-13 at the free throw line.
Jack Hiller posted a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds, going 9-10 at the free throw line. Nate Schimointz also scored 19 points and dished out si assists.
The other NWU player to score in double figures was
Deion Wells-Ross with 14 points and nine rebounds before he fouled out. Leading scorer
Cooper Cook scored just seven points and fouled out with six minutes left in regulation.
Simpson, who snapped their three-game losing streak, was led by Conor Riordan with 32 points including four 3-pointers.
NWU returns home after their three-game road trip on Wednesday to host Coe College.
