DECORAH, Iowa – Luther College broke open a two-run game with nine runs in the 7
th and 8
th innings as the Norse defeated Nebraska Wesleyan, 13-3, in Iowa Conference baseball action on Friday afternoon in Decorah, Iowa.
NWU trailed just 4-2 headed into the bottom of the 7
th inning and recorded two outs to start the inning. An error kept the inning alive and the Norse took advantage as they got a 2-run single and 2-run triple to break open the game.
The 8
th inning was more of the same for Luther as they hit a 3-run home run then a second Prairie Wolves error kept the inning going. Lutehr responded with a single and walk to load the bases. The game then ended on a hit batter in the bottom of the 8
th due to the run rule.
Luther jumped out quick with two runs in the bottom of the 1
st inning. NWU cut that lead in half as the Prairie Wolves used small ball to get two straight bunt singles.
Cam Lulow then grounded out to allow
Matt Orozco to score and make it 2-1.
A run in the bottom of the 2
nd inning made it 3-1 then Luther added another run in the 4
th inning to make the score 4-1. Nebraska Wesleyan cut the lead to two runs in the 6
th inning as Orozco singled and came around to score on an error.
Orozco would score all three Prairie Wolves runs as he blasted a solo home run over the left field fence in the top of the 8
th inning for the final run of the game.
NWU finished with seven hits in the game, as Orozco was 3-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Two of the other NWU hits were bunts with
Micah Hoage and
Cam Lulow adding the other two hits.
Brody Murphy was the starting pitcher for the Prairie Wolves going 6 2/3 innings allowing four earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Murphy (3-5) finishes the season in the top ten charts for single season strikeouts and innings pitched.
The two teams will attempt to play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at Noon if the weather holds out.
