PELLA, Iowa – Nebraska Wesleyan pushed 14
th-ranked Central College to extra innings and had a chance to pull the upset, but the Dutch got a walk-off victory in the bottom of the 9
th to earn the 2-1 victory in game two of a IIAC softball doubleheader on Thursday (April 27) in Pella, Iowa. Central also won the first game, 6-2, to earn the sweep over the Prairie Wolves.

Claire Poppe limited Central to just three hits and one earned runs through the first seven innings as she shut down the Dutch bats. Central scored their only run in the 2
nd inning to take the early 1-0 lead.
The Prairie Wolves tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the 7
th inning. Jesse Briley got a pinch hit two out double to right field, then scored on an RBI single from Nicole Van as the Prairie Wolves kept the game alive.
Nebraska Wesleyan threatened in the 8
th inning as
Jordan Arndt led off with a double. Poppe and
Destiny Indra both walked to load the bases with two outs. A ground out ended the inning for the Prairie Wolves.
Central had their first two batters reach to start the bottom of the inning, but the Prairie Wolves got two straight force outs at third base and a fly out to the warning track to end the inning. NWU didn't have a runner reach base in the 9
th inning. Central loaded the bases then got the walk-off single by a pinch hitter to end the game.
Nicole Vana led the NWU offense going 3-5 with an RBI. Arndt and Briley both doubled for the Prairie Wolves extra base hits. Poppe pitched 8 1/3 innings allowing just five hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts and five walkds.
Nebraska Wesleyan fell behind 1-0 in the opening game but took the lead in the top of the 4
th with two unearned runs.
Maddy Ethen reached on an error and scored on a single by Indra while Arndt doubled and scored on a ground out by
Nicole Belfiore.
That was all the NWU offense could get and Central plated four runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to get the victory. The Prairie Wolves committed three errors in the game and registered six hits.
Destiny Indra was a perfect 3-3 at the plate to lead the Prairie Wolves.
NWU will close out the 2017 season on Saturday when they host Loras College.
