WAVERLY, Iowa – Nebraska Wesleyan knocked of Iowa Conference leader Wartburg College, 7-6, on Monday afternoon in game three of the IIAC baseball series in Waverly, Iowa.
NWU jumped out to a 6-1 lead behind the starting pitching of
Austin Ragland and five Knights errors. Wartburg made a late push, but the Prairie Wolves withstood the challenge and got a strikeout from relief pitcher Jesse Magurie with the tying run on third base.
The Prairie Wolves (12-19, 5-10 IIAC) scored two runs in the top of the 2
nd inning to get the scoring started.
Tyler Winterstein singled then eventually scored on a throwing error by the catcher as he tried to throw him out stealing third base.
Salvador Anguiano reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a balk.
Nebraska Wesleyan got two more unearned runs in the top of the 5
th inning.
Brook Johnson and
Aaron Ochsner both singled and came around to score after Knights errors.
Wartburg got their first run in the 5
th inning to make the score 4-1. The Prairie Wolves then scored two more in the top of the 7
th as
Kyle Hunter hit a HR off the scoreboard in left center.
Ragland was solid in his start for the Prairie Wolves before giving away to the bullpen in the 7
th. He pitched six strong innings allowing three earned runs on two hits.
Wartburg started their rally with three runs in the 7
th. They added another run in the 8
th inning to pull within one run. NWU got a much needed insurance run in the top of the 9
th.
Brook Johnson doubled to left field to drive in
Spencer Scheer. That run would prove to be huge for the Prairie Wolves.
Maguire got the first two batters to start the bottom of the 9
th, before a walk to extend the inning. Back to back hits drove in a run and made the score 7-6. With they tying run at third base, Maguire got the final batter looking to seal the much needed victory.
Nebraska Wesleyan has little time to celebrate as they will host Central College on Tuesday at 3 pm at NWU Field.
