LINCOLN, Neb. – 11
th-ranked Coe College proved why they are one of the top teams in the Iowa Conference as the Kohawks swept Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon at University Place Park. Coe won game one 7-1, the shutout the Prairie Wolves 6-0 in game two.
Coe (24-5, 6-2 IIAC) pitcher Alyssa Olson was the story of game two as she took a perfect game into the bottom of the 7
th inning.
Nicole Vana singled to right field to break up the no-hitter and perfect game, but that was the only baserunner of the game for the Prairie Wolves.
Olson struck out nine and needed only 72 pitches to get the complete game victory and improve to 9-4. Coe did all their damage on offense in the third inning when they plated five runs. The Kohawks used six hits in the inning to knock out starting pitcher Jesse Briley.
LeighAnn Novotny came in to close out the game pitching for the Prairie Wolves allowing just one earned run and five hits in 4 2/3 innings.
In the opening game the Prairie Wolves had a promising start to the day. NWU loaded the bases in the bottom of the 1
st inning to pose a threat to get ahead early.
Destiny Indra worked the count full and saw over 10 pitches in her at-bat to earn a bases loaded walk and bring in
Morgan Shipley. That was the only run scored for NWU the entire day.
Nebraska Wesleyan had two hits in the bottom of the 1
st as Shipley sent a shot back up the middle that turned into a double, followed by
Jordan Arndt who singled sharply off the pitcher. The Prairie Wolves didn't get another hit until the bottom of the 7
th inning.
Coe took the lead with three runs in the third then scored in the next three consecutive innings. Haley Jones and Allie O'Brien each hit home runs to highlight the Kohawks performance.
NWU starting pitcher Novotny took the loss going 3 2/3 innings allowing four earned runs on seven hits.
Claire Poppe pitched the final 3 1/3 innings giving up two earned runs and four hits.
Nebraska Wesleyan hits the road this weekend to face Wartburg College.
