CLERMONT, Fla. – Nebraska Wesleyan extended its winning streak to four games on Tuesday as the Prairie Wolves softball team swept past Penn State – Behrend on their spring trip in Florida. NWU won the first game, 3-2, in extra innings then came back to complete the sweep with a 6-2 victory.
NWU is now 8-4 overall on the year and will have a day off Wednesday before closing the trip with four more games Thursday and Friday.
In the morning's first game, the Prairie Wolves led 1-0 heading into the final inning. The Lions then scored a run in the top of the 7
th inning to tie the game and force the extra frame. Using the international tie-breaker rule to begin the 8
th, Penn St.-Behrend quickly scored in the top of the 8
th to go ahead 2-1.
To start the bottom of the 8
th,
Madi Francis bunted to sacrifice the runner over to third base with one out.
Maddy Ethen doubled to tie the game. A walk and single loaded the bases with one out. The Lions got a strikeout giving them two outs as NWU still had the bases loaded.
Freshman
Destiny Indra got the game-winning hit to drive in
Kaley Stokey with the winning run.
NWU outhit Penn St.-Behrend 11-3, but did commit four errors. The Prairie Wolves were led offensively by
Morgan Shipley, Francis and Indra who each had two hits.
LeighAnn Novotny got the victory on the mound allowing just three hits and no earned runs with 10 strikeouts and no walks.
Nebraska Wesleyan jumped out quick in game two getting a 5-0 lead after three innings. They scored two runs in the 1
st inning and three in the 3
rd inning for the early lead. Penn St.-Behrend got their only two runs in the 4
th making the score 5-2, before NWU added another run in the 5
th inning to seal the win.
Danelle Snyder had an RBI single in the 1
st inning as NWU took advantage of three straight walks to begin the game. In the 3
rd inning,
Maddy Ethen drove in a run with a single, then Indra got a 2-run single to continue her big day.
Ethen doubled in the 4
th inning and her pinch runner
Nicole Belfiore would come around to score on a wild pitch for the final run of the game.
NWU finished with nine total hits, compared to four for the Lions. Jesse Briley got the win on the mound pitching 5 1/3 innings giving up one earned run and four hits.
Claire Poppe closed out the game not allowing a run.
