AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Nebraska Wesleyan bats came alive on Tuesday as the Prairie Wolves baseball team scored 20 runs with 22 hits in a 20-7 victory over Iowa Wesleyan University in a single 9-inning game at the Russ Matt Invitational in Florida.
The 20 runs scored were the most for a NWU baseball team since the 2002 season when they had 21 against Concordia University. With the victory, the Prairie Wolves improve to 5-4 overall on the season.
A total of 15 different Nebraska Wesleyan players recorded a hit on the day, with seven players having multi-hit performances. The Prairie Wolves hit two home runs, one triple and four doubles on the day.
NWU didn't score in the top of the 1
st inning, but they put up at least one run in every inning after that. The Prairie Wolves led 7-0 after three innings then went up 9-0 before Iowa Wesleyan finally got on the board in the fourth with a run. NWU's biggest inning was the 5
th when they scored five runs to take a 14-1 lead.
Iowa Wesleyan did respond by scoring five runs in the bottom of the 5
th to make the score 14-6. The Tigers only other run came in the bottom of the 6
th inning while NWU added six more runs.
Cole Schumacher and
Spencer Scheer hit the two home runs for the Prairie Wolves and Schumacher added a double for his two-hit day.
Aaron Ochsner,
Kyle Hunter,
Matt Orozco,
Justin Corfield and
Salvador Anguiano all had two-hit performances.
Four different pitchers were used for the Prairie Wolves. Starting pitcher Sam Condello went four innings allowing seven hits and five earned runs.
Nick Bruno,
Nate Teitler and
Dalton Hinrichs closed out the game on the mound.
NWU now has two days off before closing out the trip with three games this weekend.
