CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Tom Simon hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11
th inning to give Coe College a 7-6 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan in the IIAC baseball opener on Sunday afternoon in Cedar Rapids. Game two of the doubleheader was postponed after seven innings with the game tied at 2-2 due to darkness. It will be completed on Monday at 1pm before the final game of the series.
NWU led 5-1 heading into the bottom of the 3
rd inning as they scored in each of the first three innings. The got on the board in the 1
st inning as
Aaron Ochsner led the game off with a double then came around to score on a passed ball.
Coe responded with a run in the bottom of the 1
st inning to tie the game at 1-1. NWU re-took the lead in the 2
nd inning as
Nick Bruno doubled and scored on an infield bunt single by
Spencer Scheer.
The big inning for the Prairie Wolves was the top of the 3
rd inning. NWU pounded out five hits in the inning, including four straight to start the frame.
Cole Schumacher hit an RBI single to drive in
Kyle Hunter. Schumacher scored on a hit by
Brook Johnson. Bruno added another double, then
David Morris hit an RBI double to complete the scoring.
Coe scored one run in the bottom of the 3
rd making the score 5-2. NWU added another run in the 4
th inning to extend the lead. Hunter doubled to drive in
Salvador Anguiano who had singled. That run was the final time the Prairie Wolves would score in the game.
The Kohawks scored a run in the 4
th, then two in the 5
th. They eventually tied the game in the 7
th inning and neither team was able to plate a run for two innings sending the game to extra innings. NWU had a chance in the 9
th inning with a runner at 3
rd base but he was stranded.
With one out in the 11
th, Simon came to the plate and hit a HR over the left field fence for his first hit of the season.
NWU finished with 12 hits in the game, as Coe had 17. Ochsner, Hunter, Bruno and Morris all had two hits to lead the Prairie Wolves.
Brody Murphy was the starting pitcher for NWU going five innings allowing five runs with five strikeouts. Three relief pitchers closed out the game with
Micah Hoage going the final 2 2/3 innings to take the loss for his only run allowed.
NWU was one strike away from winning game two when Simon came through with an RBI single in the bottom of the 7
th to tie the score at 2-2. Since game one was extra innings, the second game was scheduled for seven innings. It will be completed on Monday at 1 pm.
