AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Nebraska Wesleyan pitchers combined to throw 14 scoreless innings on Saturday in a pair of shutout victories over Roger Williams to close out the Prairie Wolves baseball spring break trip. NWU won the first game 1-0 in extra innings, then took game two 4-0.
NWU finished the trip with a 5-3 record and sits at 7-5 overall on the 2017 season.
In the opening game of the day it was pitchers dual with both teams going scoreless through seven innings.
Brody Murphy of NWU and Jimmy Smith of RWU were terrific on the mound for their respective teams. Smith allowed just one hit with eight strikeouts through his first six innings before giving way to Ryan Havunen. Murphy was even more impressive throwing eight scoreless innings allowing just two hits with 10 strikeouts.
With the game tied 0-0 headed in the 8
th inning,
Salvador Anguiano led off the NWU bottom of the inning with a walk.
Justus Stocks sacrificed to advance Anguiano to second base.
Aaron Ochsner walked to put two runners one with one out. Spencer Sheer then reached base on an error to load the bases for
Kyle Hunter. Hunter delivered the game-winning hit with a single up the middle to drive in Anguiano with the winning run.
The single by Hunter was just the second hit of the game for the Prairie Wolves. Scheer had the other NWU hit in the fourth inning.
Game two started off much the same as neither team scored through the first three innings. Finally in the top of the 4
th inning the NWU offense got going. Hunter single and
Cole Schumacher had back-to-back one out singles to start the rally.
Matt Orozco drove in hunter with a sacrifice fly, then
Nick Bruno delivered the big hit.
Bruno blasted a two-run home run to give NWU a 3-0 lead headed to the bottom of the fourth inning.
Aaron Ochsner added a solo home run in the 5
th inning for a four-run advantage and that was all the NWU pitching staff would need.
Austin Ragland threw four innings to start the game, allowing just two hits with five strikeouts.
Micah Hoage pitched the final three innings to record the save. He struck out four and allowed just one hit.
NWU finished the game with nine total hits, led by
Cole Schumacher who was a perfect 3-3 at the plate. Hunter and Ochsner both had two hit games.
