LINDSBORG, Kan. – Bethany College scored four runs in the bottom of the 8
th inning to rally back and defeat Nebraska Wesleyan 6-5 in a non conference baseball game on Wednesday afternoon (March 1) in Lindsborg, Kansas.
The Swedes took advantage of a Prairie Wolves fielding error to score three unearned runs in the 8
th inning.
NWU led 4-0 early as they scored in each of the first three innings. The Prairie Wolves plated one run on a sacrifice fly from
Aaron Ochsner in the top of the 1
st. They added two more in the 2
nd inning as
Salvador Anguiano put down a perfect squeeze bunt to drive in
Jared Scdoris. Later in the inning
Spencer Scheer hit a sac fly to right for the second run. The Prairie Wolves took advantage of an error in the 3
rd inning as
Cole Schumacher reached by error. He would eventually come around to score on a wild pitch.
Bethany (10-5) finally got on the board in the bottom of the 5
th inning. A walk and hit batter to open the inning hurt the Prairie Wolves as the Swedes drove the two lead off batters in with a double and ground out making the score 4-2.
The Prairie Wolves (2-2) extended the lead in the 6
th inning on their third sac fly of the game, this time by
Kyle Hunter. After the 6
th inning, the Prairie Wolves offense had only one hit the final three innings.
In the bottom of the 7
th Bethany mounted their first big threat. Two walks to start the inning put two on with nobody out.
Brody Murphy came in to relief
Tucker McHugh and got two quick outs. He walked a batter to load the bases but ended the threat with a strikeout.
Murphy then got into his own trouble in the 8
th inning by hitting a batter and allowing a single to start the frame. A fielder's choice force out put runners at first and third with one out, but he then hit another batter to load the bases.
Jesse Maguire came in to try and end the threat. He got a ground ball to second for the second out making the score 5-3. The next batter hit a grounder to shortstop that was misplayed allowing the inning to continue. Two more singles, including the eventual game-winner by Dalton Bidon sealed the win.
Nebraska Wesleyan used nine pitchers on the day, using a different pitcher to start the first six innings.
Jesse Maguire is the hard luck loser giving up the winning run in the 8
th. Prior to the 8
th inning the NWU pitching staff held Bethany to just two hits.
The Prairie Wolves finished with six hits on the day as six different players recorded a hit.
NWU will now prepare for their Spring Trip to Florida (March 5-11) where the Prairie Wolves will play eight games at the Russ Matt Tournament.
