LINCOLN – Nebraska Wesleyan set a new school record for points in a blowout 144-72 victory over Kansas Christian College on Senior Night Tuesday (Feb. 14) in the final regular season home game at Snyder Arena.
The previous school record for points was 138 versus York College on Feb. 13, 1995. NWU jumped out to a 75-24 lead at halftime as they shot 65.2 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes. They just missed the school record for points in a half, that was 78 also set against York in 1995.
NWU made 20 3-pointers for the game shooting 57.1 percent behind the arc as 11 different players made a trifecta going 20-35 as a team.
It took the Prairie Wolves a while to get going as they trailed 5-4 after three minutes of play. They then outscored the Falcons 22-4 over the next six minutes. The big runs continued in the first half as NWU went on a 26-3 run to get up 56-18 with 5:31 to play. They scored 19 more points in the final five minutes to get up by 51 points at halftime.
Kansas Christian, a member of NCCAA in their first year of basketball, scored five straight points to start the second half as they played with some energy out of the locker room. The Prairie Wolves then took back control of the overmatched Falcons and continued to add onto the lead.
All 17 NWU players that suited up scored points, with 11 of the players making 3-pointers. Seven players scored in double figures for the Prairie Wolves.
Leading the way was
Cooper Cook with 21 points, seven rebounds and four assists. He was one of three players that made three 3-pointers.
Senior
Trevor Leiting scored a career-high 15 points on Senior Day. Leiting was 3-5 on 3-pointers in his final regular season game at Snyder Arena. Other seniors playing their final home regular season game were
Blake Ruiz and
Max Cook. Ruiz had seven points, three rebounds and three assists, with Cook scoring a season-high eight points with three assists.
Ryan Garver had 13 points,
Nate Schimonitz was 5-5 from the field for 12 points with six assists.
Nate Bahe went 3-4 off the bench for 11 points with
Austin Hall and
Jake Scheef both scoring 10 points off the bench.
NWU will now prepare for a huge game on Saturday when they return to IIAC play at Loras College. The Prairie Wolves are playing for the top two seeds, and perhaps a conference title.
