LINCOLN, Neb. – A 26-3 run in the 2
nd half broke open a one-point game and led to Nebraska Wesleyan rolling to a 100-81 victory over Central College to complete the season sweep over the Dutch and pick up a key IIAC men's basketball victory at home in Snyder Arena.
A pair of Central free throws made the score 65-64 with 10:05 to play in the 2
nd half. From there, the Prairie Wolves took over and took command of the game. NWU scored six unanswered points before Central got a free throw. The Prairie Wolves then used a quick 8-3 run to get up 12 points.
With the score at 79-67, NWU scored 12 straight points over the next 2:24 to build up a 91-67 advantage with 4:09 to play. That run deflated the Dutch and allowed the Prairie Wolves to soak in the victory during the final minutes.
The first half was a back and forth battle with the lead changing five times with six ties. NWU struggled on the offensive end in the first half making just 4-19 from 3-point range. Both teams went to the locker room tied at 39-39.
To start the second half, the two teams were exchanging big shots as 3-point shooting picked up for both squads. During the first eight minutes of the game the lead changed eight more times, until NWU finally got the lead on two free throws by
Deion Wells-Ross with 12:04 remaining. Central got within one point once more, but then the monster run ensued.
Nebraska Wesleyan surpassed 100 points for the seventh time this season as they put up 62 points in the second half. In the second half, NWU was lights out from the field making 19-31 field goals (61.3%) and 6-8 from 3-point range (75.0 %).
The Prairie Wolves finished the game shooting 45.6 percent, making 10-27 from beyond the arc. A big stat was how NWU controlled the glass, outrebounding the Dutch 48-33.
Freshman
Nate Schimonitz continued his solid play by pouring in 26 points with eight rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Cooper Cook also had a big offensive game with 22 points, making 7-8 from the floor including 2-2 on 3-pointers.
Jack Hiller broke out of his mild scoring slump with 13 points, making 3-5 on 3-pointers with six rebounds. The other player in double figures was
Ryan Garver with 10 points.
Central was led by Pete Walker with 15 points before he fouled out.
Nebraska Wesleyan is now 14-6 overall and 8-4 in IIAC action to move alone into 2
nd place in the league standings. The Prairie Wolves have two more home games on this home stand, continuing Saturday versus Simpson.
