Prairie Wolves Take Down Doane 107-80 in Renewed Rivalry Game

LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan outscored in-state rival Doane by 24 points in the second half as the Prairie Wolves took down the Tigers 107-80 in the 199th all-time meeting as the rivalry was renewed on Monday night (Dec. 4) at Snyder Arena.
 
NWU has now won eight straight over Doane in the series with the Tigers last victory coming in the 2012-13 season.  The Prairie Wolves remain undefeated on the season at 6-0 as they went over 100 points for the third time this year.
 
It was the Tigers that came out fast jumping ahead of the Prairie Wolves by 11 points just over four minutes into the game.  Doane led 17-6 before NWU started to rally back. 
 
The Prairie Wolves used a 13-0 run over a stretch of 3:48 late in the first half as they turned a 26-35 deficit into a 39-35 lead on an emphatic fast break dunk by Deion Wells-Ross.  During the run, both Wells-Ross and Jack Hiller had five points to get the home crowd rolling.
 
NWU took a 43-40 lead into halftime, then came out of the locker room in the second half on a mission.
 
Ryan Garver scored two layups to get the offense going and the momentum went completely over to the Prairie Wolves.  NWU used a 16-2 run to start the second half to get up by 17 points and they wouldn't let Doane get any closer than 14 points the rest of the way.  It only took a little over four minutes for the Prairie Wolves to make the big run.
 
The Prairie Wolves were able to get up by as many as 27 points midway through the second half as they shot 60.0 from the floor in the half, including 6-12 from 3-point range.  Doane was only 2-9 on 3-pointers in the second half and committed 12 turnovers in the period.
 
Nebraska Wesleyan had all five starters score in double figures in their balanced offensive attack.  As a team, NWU ended the game shooting 52.8 percent, making 11-26 from 3-point land.  The Prairie Wolves held a 39-35 advantage on the glass, after being outrebounded by five in the first half.  NWU's pressure defense also forced the Tigers into 23 total turnovers.
 
Guard Jack Hiller led NWU with 24 points, making 9-12 from the field and 2-3 on 3-point attempts.  Hiller scored 15 points in the first half to share top scoring honors with Deion Wells-Ross.  Wells-Ross ended the game with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds to go along with five assists.
 
Ryan Garver had a season-high 18 points and made his first two 3-pointers of the season as the Tigers were daring him to shoot from the outside.  Garvers had four assists and two steals while shooting 8-10 from the floor as he didn't miss a 2-point attempt.
 
Cooper Cook also finished with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds with two blocked shots.  Cook didn't make a field goal in the first half, but came on in the second half and also went 7-7 at the free throw line.  The final player in double figures was Nate Bahe with 13 points and a team-high six assists.
 
Doane was led by Nick Kornieck who scored 29 points, making 10-10 at the free throw line.  Rylee Zimmerman scored 17 and Quin Conner had 13 as the other two Tigers in double figures.
 
Nebraska Wesleyan, off to their first 6-0 start since the 2008-09 season, is right back in action on Wednesday night (Dec. 6) when they return to IIAC play at Central College.
