ARLINGTON, Va. – Nebraska Wesleyan made 20-30 shot attempts in the 2
nd half and held Marymount to only 25.8 percent shooting as the Prairie Wolves men's basketball team completed their trip to the East Coast with a 87-46 blowout victory over Marymount University (Va.) on Monday night (Dec. 18).
NWU improves to 10-0 with the 41-point victory and will be off until December 30 when they take on the top scoring team in NCAA III, Grinnell College.
The 46 points by Marymount was the lowest point total allowed in the four years under head coach
Dale Wellman and the fewest points allowed since the 2012-13 season.
Nebraska Wesleyan started very slow and trailed the majority of the first half. The Prairie Wolves did not take over the lead until the 4:53 mark of the half when
Nate Bahe connected on a 3-pointer to put the Prairie Wolves up 19-18. That shot sparked a 22-1 run by the Prairie Wolves to end the half as Marymount was held to only 1 point the final 5:58 of the half.
Marymount held an 18-14 lead that turned into a Prairie Wolves 36-19 halftime advantage. The Saints field goal drought ended right to start the second half as they made a 3-pointer.
From there, NWU once again went on a big run of 13-0 over the next five minutes to go up by 27 points with 15 minutes left in the half as the Saints didn't score for five minutes. Back-to-back 3-pointers put the Prairie Wolves ahead by over 30 points with 13:20 remaining and NWU cruised the rest of the way.
NWU shot a season-best 55.0 percent from the field for the game, missing only 10 shots in the second half. Marymount made only 8-31 in the second half including 2-12 from 3-point range. The Prairie Wolves also forced 27 turnovers, scoring 34 points off those Saints turnovers.
Nate Bahe led four Prairie Wolves that reached double figures in scoring with 24 points. Bahe had a near perfect night from the floor making 10-11 field goals, including 2-2 from 3-point range. He was also 2-2 at the free throw line and tied for the team lead with eight rebounds.
Sharpshooting
Patrick Sullivan reached double figures for the second straight game off the bench scoring 11 points, hitting 2-4 from 3-point land.
Ryan Garver had a complete game with 10 points, a team-high seven assists and eight rebounds with two steals.
Cooper Cook was the other player in double figures with 10 points.
Marymount had only one player score in double figures as Brandon Rogers had 11 points.
The Prairie Wolves, off to their best start in 20 years, are outscoring their opponents by 26.6 points to start the season.
