LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan completed a successful Snyder Classic by remaining undefeated on the year with a 95-78 victory over Bethany Lutheran College on day two of their home opening weekend.
NWU (4-0) was the only undefeated team at the 29
th Annual Snyder Classic this season as they won their 14
th straight Snyder Classic game dating back to 2010.
The Prairie Wolves made their first seven shots of the game and jumped out to an early double digit lead. NWU led by as many as 15 points at 21-6 with just under five minutes gone in the first half. NWU didn't miss their first field goal attempt until the 12:09 mark of the first half.
A switch to a zone defense slowed the NWU offense as they scored 30 points in the first ten minutes then were held to 15 in the final 10 minutes. The Prairie Wolves held a 45-36 advantage heading into halftime.
Bethany Lutheran (1-4) came out in the second half as the more aggressive team and quickly cut the lead to two points at 48-46. NWU responded by building back a double digit lead at 63-52 on a layup by
Austin Hall at the 12:39 mark. The Vikings proved up to the challenge and got within five points on a 3-pointer at the 10:05 mark.
NWU went on a 15-7 run over the next five minutes and got up by 13 points on a backdoor layup from
Nate Bahe. That double digit lead would prove to be too much overcome as the Vikings never got back within single digits.
Cooper Cook was the main offensive weapon for the Prairie Wolves attack scoring a game-high 29 points to earn Snyder Classic MVP recognition. Cook was 9-13 from the floor and 7-10 from 3-point range on the night. He also pulled down five rebounds with three assists, two blocks and two steals.
Dylan Dirks joined Cook on the All-Tournament team as he came off the bench to score 15 points, one night after scoring a career-high 23 points on Friday.
Two other NWU players reached double figures in scoring.
Deion Wells-Ross posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds with a team-high five assists.
Ryan Garver added 10 points on the night.
Bethany Lutheran was led by Trenton Krueger with 20 points and eight rebounds.
NWU shot 51.5 percent from the floor, making 13-35 from 3-point range. The Vikings were also over 50 percent at 50.9, but made only 7-21 3-pointers.
Joining Cook and Dirks on the All-Tournament team were Brady Rose and Trenton Krueger from Bethany Lutheran, Brock Butler of Iowa Wesleyan and Ben Widdes of Carroll.
