Simpson Scores Last Minute Goal to Edge NWU 2-1

INDIANOLA, Iowa – A classic match between two even teams came down to the final minute before Simpson College got a late goal to edge Nebraska Wesleyan 2-1 in IIAC men's soccer action on Wednesday night (Oct. 4) in Indianola, Iowa.

Nebraska Wesleyan nearly handed the Storm their first loss of the season, but the last minute goal allowed the Storm to move to 3-0 in conference play and 11-0-1 overall.  NWU drops to 6-5-1 and 1-2 in conference play.

With the score tied at 1-1, NWU had two chances to take the lead.  Brady Blazek and Jake Kennedy both had shots on goal in the final seven minutes but Simpson goalkeeper Jake Potratz saved both attempts.

As time was ticking down in the final minute, Tanner Anderson scored on a header off an assist by Garrett Prochop from five yards out for the game-winning goal and causing heartbreak for the Prairie Wolves.

The IIAC leading Storm got ahead first as Garrett Pochop scored in the 20th minute off an assist from Nick Joslyn.  Pochop scored his 12th goal of the year on a shot from outside 18 yards.

Less than two minutes later it was the Prairie Wolves top scorer who took his turn at finding the back of the net.  Jake Kennedy tied the match with a goal in the 22nd minute off an assist from Brady Blazek.  Kennedy, who was the IIAC Player of the Week, notched his team-best seventh goal of the year.

The score would remain at 1-1 headed to halftime.  In the second half, the two teams both had prime opportunity to take the lead but were denied by saves in goal.

Simpson finished the match with 18 total shots, including nine on goal.  NWU also had nine shots on goal with 16 total attempts.

It won't get any easier for Nebraska Wesleyan this weekend when they face Wartburg College, another team without a loss in IIAC play.  The Prairie Wolves and Knights will meet on Saturday at Abel Stadium at 4 pm.
