STORM LAKE, Iowa – Nebraska Wesleyan held Buena Vista scoreless in the second half and got a big interception from
Heath Hovendick late in the 4
th quarter as the Prairie Wolves held on for a 14-13 victory to earn their first win of the season.
Buena Vista was driving for the go-ahead score in the final minutes and got down to the 30-yard line, but that is when Hovendick made the interception at the 15-yard line. NWU then got a first down to run out the clock and seal the victory.
All the points in the game came in the first half. NWU scored first with less than three minutes gone in the game as
Shaka Taylor scored on a 1-yard TD run after he caught a long pass to get down to the one.
Buena Vista answered later in the first quarter as TJ Lint caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Cole Miller. The Beavers then went for two and the pass attempt failed making the score 7-6.
BVU then took the lead early in the second half as Lint caught his second TD of the game, this time from 16 yards out. The Beavers kicked the PAT this time to take a 13-7 lead.
Right before halftime the Prairie Wolves retook the lead when
James Skerjanec caught a 23-yard TD pass from
Jonathan Curti. The PAT from
Jackson Hinze was good to put NWU ahead 14-13 and that would be the final score.
NWU and BVU entered the game ranked last in the IIAC in scoring defense, but the two squads stepped up their game on a windy day in Storm Lake, Iowa. Neither offense was able to get anything going in the second half and the NWU defense made the big play late to secure the win.
The stat sheet was just as even as the final score. NWU had 368 yards of total offense, compared to 369 for Buena Vista. NWU had 256 yards through the and 112 on the ground.
Jonathan Curti was 19-39 for 256 yards with a touchdown and one interception.
Shaka Taylor had a huge day rushing the ball 32 times for 116 yards with a touchdown and catching seven passes for 98 yards.
Jackson Hinze and
Bryce Darner each had four catches.
Alex Kruse led the Prairie Wolves defense with 12 total tackles.
Jacob Garnas had two tackles-for-loss in his first career start.
Nebraska Wesleyan will now be off next Saturday before returning the following week to host Simpson College.
