Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Loras Wins 92-89 on Last Second 3-Pointer

LINCOLN, Neb. – Matt Dacy-Seijo made a 3-pointer from the corner as time expired to give Loras College a 92-89 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan in an Iowa Conference men's basketball thriller on Wednesday night (Jan. 18) at Snyder Arena.

With the game tied at 89-89, the Duhawks inbounded the ball from the midcourt sideline with 3.0 seconds left.  Leading scorer Ryan DiCanio dribbled through the lane and found Dacy-Seijo in the corner in front of his bench.  He let the 3-pointer fly as the buzzer sounded and it went through the net and was called good by the referees.  With replay not available to use, the call stands as the Duhawks came out on top.

The win was the 10th straight for Loras as they improve to 13-4 and 6-2 in IIAC play, while NWU had their 14-game home winning streak snapped.

In a game that saw the lead change 10 times, including four in the final two minutes, each team had several chances to win it late.

A pair of free throws with 54 seconds left put Loras ahead 87-86.  On the Prairie Wolves possession, Cooper Cook was fouled on a post up sending him to the line for two shots.  Cook went 1-2 to tie the game at 87-87 with 39 seconds remaining.  Loras held the ball for a final shot, but a late foul put Justin VanWambeke at the line for two shots with 11.9 left.  He sank both free throws to give Loras a 2-point lead.

NWU threw the ball inbounds to Jack Hiller who drove the lane and dished off to a wide open Deion Wells-Ross under the basket who made the game-tying shot with 4.9 remaining.  That set up the eventual game-winner for Loras.

The Prairie Wolves jumped out to an early eight point lead at 19-11 with 13:42 remaining, but that was their largest lead of the day.  A late scoring drought allowed Loras to overtake the lead.  Nebraska Wesleyan was only 2-15 from the field to end the half as the Duhawks led 41-35 at the break.  NWU had a stretch of nearly seven minutes without a basket to end the first half.

Loras maintained the lead to start the second half, but NWU slowly chipped away.  The Prairie Wolves took a brief lead at 50-48 with 14:24 left, but Loras quickly regained the advantage.  NWU didn't get back ahead for nearly seven minutes until Deion Wells-Ross scored on a fast break layup at the 7:20 mark.  That lasted all of 28 seconds until the Duhawks went up again.  They stayed ahead all the way until 2:00 left when Nate Schimonitz nailed a 3-pointer to go up 84-83.  Two lead changes and four ties played out the final two minutes.

Nebraska Wesleyan did not have a great day shooting the basketball, hitting 43.1 percent from the floor but only 4-19 from 3-point land.  The Prairie Wolves also were only 29-43 at the free throw line compared to 19-24 for the Duhawks who lead the nation in free throw shooting.

Loras was led by Ryan DiCanio with 27 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.  As a team the Duhawks shot 45.2 percent and went 7-24 from downtown.

The Prairie Wolves had five players finish in double figures.  Nate Schimonitz led the way with 24 points.  He bounced back strong in the 2nd half after going 3-12 from the floor in the first half to make 6-10 in the second half with two 3-pointers.

Deion Wells-Ross had another strong performance with 17 points off the bench while Ryan Garver had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Cooper Cook chipped in 11 points while Dylan Dirks had 10.

NWU will try to bounce back on Saturday when they host Wartburg College.
