CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Coe held Nebraska Wesleyan to a season low point total and 24 points under their scoring average as the Kohawks defeated the IIAC leading Prairie Wolves 85-73 in men's basketball conference action Wednesday night (Jan. 11) at Eby Fieldhouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
NWU scored just 27 points in the first half, after putting up 65 in the first half the previous game. Coe led by as many as 22 points in the first half as the Prairie Wolves dug themselves into a deep deficit on the road.
The Prairie Wolves battled back and pulled within eight points in the final minutes, but it was too little too late for NWU in a costly road conference loss.
Nebraska Wesleyan falls to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in IIAC play as they had their three-game conference winning game snapped. Coe improves to 3-2 in IIAC action to tie NWU for third place in the league standings, as they are now 7-7 overall.
A big stat difference on the night came at the free throw line where Coe outscored NWU by 31 points. The Kohawks were 39-51 at the free throw line, compared to 8-12 for the Prairie Wolves.
After knocking down 19 3-pointers at home against Luther on Saturday, the Prairie Wolves struggled from deep on the road in Iowa. NWU was 7-22 from 3-point land for just 31.8 percent. They shot 40.3 percent overall.
Coe, who is the top defensive team in the IIAC, shot 45.7 percent from the field and just 4-16 from 3-point land.
Freshman
Nate Schimonitz led Nebraska Wesleyan with 22 points, with
Cooper Cook making 4-9 from 3-point range to add 20 points. They were the only two NWU players to score in double figures.
Coe was led by Marshall Shedeck who had a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds.
NWU is back in the friendly confines of Snyder Arena on Saturday as they host University of Dubuque at 4 pm.
