Kohawks Win Rain-Soaked Homecoming Game 48-17

In a game that had two weather delays and was played primarily in rainy conditions, Coe College came away with a 48-17 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan on Homecoming Saturday (Sept. 24) at Abel Stadium.

The first delay occurred early in the 2nd quarter and lasted one hour and 20 minutes with Coe leading 17-0.  The Prairie Wolves were gaining momentum after the delay and had cut lead to 31-17 in the 3rd quarter when lightning struck again.  This time the game was delayed just under one hour, but it was the Kohawks that came out firing after this delay.

NWU got a quick three and out after the delay, but the Prairie Wolves offense also went three and out.  Two plays later, Trevor Heitland got free for a 63-yard TD run that ruined any momentum that was gained.  Coe added another touchdown and field goal in the fourth quarter making the final 48-17.

Coe, who had outscored their first three opponents by over 30 points, proved that they are a team to be reckoned with in the IIAC.  The Kohawks quick strike offense got several big plays and jumped out to a 24-0 lead.

Nebraska Wesleyan got their first points of the game in the 2nd quarter on a 35-yard field goal as time expired for the first half making the score 24-3 at halftime.  On the Prairie Wolves first drive of the third quarter, they marched down the field and Ben Green hit Joel Wiedel for a 24-yard TD pass as he made a man miss and stayed along the sidelines for the score.

With the lead down to 24-10, NWU had all the momentum and forced Coe into a 3rd & 7.  NWU appeared to have the QB in trouble, but Gavin Glenn escaped and found a wide open Mitchell Malloy downfield for an 82-yard TD to put the Kohawks back up by 21 and they never looked back.

The Prairie Wolves ran 89 plays on offense, compared to only 65 for Coe.  However, the Kohawks put up 469 yards averaging 7.2 per play while NWU had 351 total yards.

Ben Green threw a season-high 45 passes going 22-45 for 257 with two touchdowns.  Bryce Darner caught six passes for 76 yards and had a TD reception on a 4th down play in the back of the end zone.  Sammy Zitek caught five balls for 44 yards.

Joel Wiedel rushed 22 times for 71 yards, caught four passes for 50 yards and finished with 237 yards of all-purpose yardage.

Riley Shoemaker led the NWU defense with 14 total tackles and an interception.

Coe was led on offense by running back Trevor Heitland who had 173 yards on 19 carries with two touchdowns.  Gavin Glenn was 12-20 for 194 yards through the air.

NWU falls to 0-2 in the Iowa Conference and 1-3 overall as they lost three straight home games for the first time since 2002.  The Prairie Wolves are on the road next week at Luther College.
