Bats Come Alive as NWU Rolls Past Dordt in GPAC Tournament

CRETE, Neb. – One game after being held to just one hit, the Nebraska Wesleyan softball team kept their season alive as they pounded out 15 hits as they rolled to a 11-3 victory over Dordt College in an elimination game at the GPAC Softball Tournament.

With the victory, the Prairie Wolves remain alive in the postseason as they advance to day two of the GPAC Tournament on Thursday.  NWU will face the No. 3 seed Dakota Wesleyan at Noon at Ledon Complex in Crete.

NWU wasted little time to get their offense on track in the game against the Defenders.  Six of the first seven batters reached base as NWU recorded five hits and knocked the starting pitcher out after getting just one out.  Rachel Kubik and Madi Francis each had RBI doubles, while Maddy Ethen hit an RBI single and Danelle Snyder got a sacrifice fly to put the Prairie Wolves up 4-0 after one inning.

In the second inning, the top of the order go the bats going right away just like in the first inning.  Nicole Vana singled for the second straight inning.  She would score on an error by the Dordt third baseman.  Francis remained hot at the plate with an RBI single to drive in Kassie Knauss.  Jordan Arndt kept the hit parade rolling with an RBI single down the left field line.  Hunter Bailey drove in two runs with a single to right field as NWU jumped out to a 9-0 lead.

The Prairie Wolves led 10-0 after the top of the third inning as Knauss doubled and scored on a ground out by Kubik.  Dordt did respond by getting three runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning to make the score 10-3.

Needing one run to get the eight runs necessary for the run rule, NWU got three hits in the 4th inning with Knauss driving in Kaley Stokey for the run needed to end the game.

The top five batters in the NWU lineup each had at least two hits as they went a combined 11-19 at the plate with three doubles and seven RBI.  Francis was 3-4 with a double and two RBI.  Vana, Knauss, Kubik and Ethen all had two hits in the game as the Prairie Wolves racked up 15 total hits.

Marisa Garver allowed three runs in five innings with a strikeout to pick up the victory and improve to 13-8 overall.
