Milestone Win For NWU Basketball in Season Finale

YANKTON, S.D. -- It was a milestone day for the Nebraska Wesleyan University men's basketball team on Saturday in the regular season finale as the Prairie Wolves defeated Mount Marty College 91-77 at Cimpl Arena.

NWU earned their 20th victory of the season, the first time since 1997-98 that a Nebraska Wesleyan men's basketball team posted a 20-win season.  The Prairie Wolves also extended their winning streak to seven games, their longest conference winning streak since the '98-99 season.

With the win, head coach Dale Wellman earned his 100th career victory.

It wasn't an easy victory for NWU as the winless Mount Marty Lancers put up a fight on their senior day.  Mount Marty led by two points at halftime, 42-40 and led by as many as five points early in the second half.

Finally the Prairie Wolves got on a roll as they went on a 18-0 run to turn a 62-60 lead into an 80-60 lead with 4:27 to play.

The top shooting 3-point team in the nation had by far their worst performance of the year.  The Prairie Wolves were 1-30 from long range, as Trey Bardsley was the only player to make a 3-point shot.

NWU did improve their overall shooting from the floor in the second half as they hit 48.6 percent in teh final 20 minutes to finish the game at 45.9 percent.

Bardsley was the top scorer for the Prairie Wolves who had five players reach double figures.  Bardsley had 19 points and a career-high seven steals to go along with four assists.  Cooper Cook came off the bench to score 17 points with three blocked shots.  Blake Ruiz was the one NWU player that had a great day shooting the basketball making 7-of-8 from the floor for 14 points.  Travis Giesselmann scored 13 and Max Cook had 12 points.

Mount Marty was led by Deric Denning who scored 19 points with four made 3-pointers.

NWU now prepares to host Dordt College in the opening round of the GPAC Postseason Tournament on Wednesday night at Snyder Arena. NWU is the No. 2 seed and Dordt is the No. 7 seed.
