Mount Pleasant, Iowa – Nebraska Wesleyan improved to 3-0 to start the 2016-17 season and they topped 100 points for the third time this season as the Prairie Wolves went on the road and defeated Iowa Wesleyan 101-89 in NCAA III men's basketball action Tuesday night (Nov. 22).
The Prairie Wolves got up by 18 points in the second half, then survived a late flurry by the Tigers to hold on for the 12-point victory. NWU led 76-58 with just over 12 minutes remaining, but Iowa Wesleyan made a late run.
NWU led by four points with just over two minutes remaining, but outscored IWU 11-3 down the stretch to earn their ninth straight regular season win.
After torching the nets from deep in the opening tournament, NWU made only 5-17 from 3-point land on Tuesday night. The Prairie Wolves shot 50.0 percent from the floor as they attacked the rim and got several layups off the full court pressure.
NWU also struggled at the free throw line, hitting around 50 percent for the majority of the game before finishing stronger at 61.0 making 25-41 at the charity stripe.
Freshman
Nate Schimonitz recorded his first career double-double to lead the Prairie Wolves. Schimonitz had 24 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three assists.
Cooper Cook scored 20 points, making 4-9 from 3-point range to lead the team from long range..
Two other NWU players reached double figures in scoring on the night coming off the bench for NWU.
Deion Wells-Ross scored 20 points with eight rebounds as he was 10-12 at the free throw line.
Ryan Garver scored 15 points off the bench for NWU.
Former NWU player Mitch Drey scored 22 points to tie for the team lead in scoring for Iowa Wesleyan. Also scoring 22 points was Steven Soukup.
NWU will make their home debut this weekend as the Prairie Wolves host the 28
th annual Snyder Classic on Friday and Saturday. NWu will play at 7 pm on both evenings
