Double OT Goal Lifts Central Past NWU In IIAC Tournament

PELLA, Iowa – Central College scored the only goal of the match in second overtime to give the Dutch a 1-0 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan in the opening round of the 2016 IIAC Postseason Women's Soccer Tournament on Saturday (Oct. 29) in Pella, Iowa.

The loss ends the Prairie Wolves season as they finish 7-11-1 overall in their first year competing in the Iowa Conference.  Central improves to 15-3-1 and will advance to the IIAC Tournament semifinals to face 2nd seeded Luther College on Wednesday.

In the second matchup between the two teams this season, it was the second time the Prairie Wolves and Dutch went into overtime.  Central also won the first meeting 3-2 in OT.

NWU, the No. 6 seed, held their own against the No. 3 seeded Dutch and withstood a barrage of shot attempts.  Central had 13 total shots compared to only four for the Prairie Wolves.  NWU goalkeeper Madi Francis recorded five saves in her final match in a NWU uniform.

Early in the second overtime period, Central was finally able to convert.  Lauryn Kramer collected the ball at the top of the box and found the back of the net for the game-winner at the 101:42 mark to end the match.

That shot was the only shot either team attempted during the overtime period.  The first ten minutes were played without a shot, until the Dutch got the game-winner in the next ten minutes.

Nebraska Wesleyan has now made the postseason tournament in each of the past two seasons, and will be poised to come back next season to earn a postseason victory as NWU has a young squad in a program that is on the rise under coach Tudor Flintham.
